After The Move

by Carla Hill

That is all important, but what about after the move when the money has exchanged hands and the movers have gone away? What is the next step?

Here's your "how to" guide in putting your best foot forward after a move. First, develop a game plan for unpacking. Some new homeowners like to pick one special room to make "homey" before moving on to other areas of the house.

For some people this may mean a lovely bedroom retreat, complete with folded towels and a fully-made bed. Others may prefer an outdoor patio ready for a quiet evening and a pitcher of iced tea. Creating your safe spot is about making yourself feel at home.

If you have children you might consider putting their room at the top of the list. Big moves can make children nervous or even scared. Set up familiar items and comfortable spaces. It all comes down to making the new house your home.

Many new homeowners want to have friends and family over to share in the joy of the new home. When it comes to housewarming parties, there are a couple rules of etiquette we recommend you follow.

Old rules of propriety said you couldn't throw your own housewarming party and that rule still stands if you are expecting gifts. In this case, it is considered a faux pas to throw your own party. The party should instead be hosted by a friend or family member.

If you are simply wanting to share your home with friends and family, it's fine to throw a party on your own. Just call it something other than a "housewarming" so that there's no confusion about gifting. Instead call it a BBQ, dinner, or a "new house party." Or simply say "no gifts, please" on the invitation.

Settling into a new neighborhood means creating a new community family. Take the opportunity to introduce yourself to neighbors and to become involved in area events and activities. Help kids to join sports leagues or sign up for their favorite hobbies. Now is the time to step outside your comfort zone and learn more about your new community.

Moving and buying a home can be full of lots of unexpected twists and turns, but what comes after the move can be the most exciting.
